DuPage Public Safety Communications (DU-COMM) accepts applications for Experienced Full-time Telecommunicators year-round.

THIS IS AN IN-PERSON POSITION, REMOTE WORK IS NOT AN OPTION.

Position Summary

A Telecommunicator is responsible for answering 9-1-1 telephone lines and recording and relaying sensitive information that may involve life and death situations.

Employees will rotate on all 3 shifts during their first 2 years, therefore all applicants must have the ability to work any of the 3 shifts, weekends and holidays along with overtime that maybe mandatory. Schedules are based on a 21 day cycle where you never work more than 4 days in a row and are off every 3rd weekend.

Essential Job Functions

Telecommunicator job duties include answering 9-1-1 telephones, transmitting vital information to emergency personnel via the radio, relaying information via the Computer-Aided Dispatch terminal, monitoring fire/burglar alarms, and answering administrative lines serving the police/fire personnel.

Providing various notifications to citizens or businesses such as providing information on accident victims, arrested persons, alarm activations, etc.

Assists with a variety of other tasks such as arranging tows, special tests of school radios, and providing notifications as needed to utilities or other agencies such as ComEd, Nicor, E.P.A., railroads, etc.

Performs related work as required.

Other Job Functions

Advancement opportunities include: TC III (cross-trained on both police and fire dispatching), Communications Training Officer (CTO – training of new hires and continuing education of current employees), Lead TC (assists Communications Management in administrative and supervisory functions) and Language Operator (LNG – bi-lingual in specified languages: Spanish, Polish, Farsi, Vietnamese or Mandarin).

Qualifications

Requirements:
• Must have recent Police or Fire dispatch experience (2+ yrs)
• Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
• Applicants must have a High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Applicants must be able to accurately type at least 35 wpm
• Applicants must be able to pass the applicant testing, full police background investigation, polygraph, psychological exam and physical/drug/hearing/vision screenings
• Schedule flexibility and multi-tasking are fundamental

Education/Experience Required

Beneficial Qualifications:
• Military radio experience
• Bi-Lingual Spanish/English skills
• Computer/data entry experience

Physical Requirements

Works in office environment. Little physical strength and/or endurance required. Position is physically comfortable. Occasionally, job may require physical exertion such as lifting, stooping, reaching, walking, etc.

Must maintain vision to 20/20 corrected vision; must hear speech out of both ears in the normal range of 30 DB at 500 to 2000 Hz range. Must be able to speak and communicate clearly over telephones and radio. Must be capable of sitting for up to 8-12 hours per day. Must be able to wear a headset. Must be capable of activating radio and phone systems utilizing buttons and switches. Must be able to input data via a keyboard.
